What is the Habit Challenge™ Shake?

It’s a metabolic challenge beverage that is nutritionally equivalent to a large American breakfast.

During the testing process, you collect blood samples at different points before and after you drank the shake. Using these samples, a lab measures indicators in your blood. Your results show us how your body responded to the carbs, fats, and protein in the shake.

The results may also help inform your personalized Nutrition Plan, which includes your Habit Type, or your ideal ratio of carbs, fats, and protein.

 

Q & A: Everything You Need to Know about the Habit Challenge™ Shake

Our Habit Challenge™ Shake lives up to its name (and reputation). Coming in at 14 ounces, it is a dense meal replacement beverage that has the caloric and macro (i.e., carbs, fat, protein) equivalent of a typical American breakfast (think pancakes, eggs, and bacon). Oh, and you have to drink it in 5 minutes.

Below we answer your most commonly asked questions and shed some scientific light on the cornerstone of our Nutrition Test.

Why am I drinking this?

Challenge testing is a very sensitive way to assess your body’s nutritional needs. Your health is determined by the interaction of your unique biological blueprint in combination with your choices and your environment. It’s nature and nurture. One of the most important factors that can affect our health and wellbeing is what we choose to eat and drink.  Each time we eat, we test our body’s capacity to maintain balance, or homeostasis. Our body’s ability to adequately react to these external challenges and maintain balance is termed “phenotypic flexibility”. To test your phenotypic flexibility, Habit looks at how the levels of various nutrition-related biomarkers in your blood change in response to the challenge shake.

Is this backed by science?

You bet. Habit partnered with TNO, a leading European independent research organization, to develop the Habit Challenge shake. TNO is a thought leader in Systems Biology and a pioneer of short-term metabolic testing. Beyond TNO, the scientific community also sees utility in the metabolic challenges.  They recognize that the fasting to fed state (i.e., before and after the challenge shake) transition is key to understanding the metabolic changes that occur in health states. Adding additional scientific support to short-term metabolic testing, Habit conducted clinical research validating our very own Habit Challenge Shake and the initial results were presented at the Experimental Biology meetings in April. So, not only are the contents of our shake proprietary, but our shake is also on the cutting edge of science.

Is this safe?

Yes! It contains sugar, oil, and milk protein isolate (whey) to provide all 3 macronutrients (carbs, fat, and protein, respectively).

Why do we use a mixed macronutrient challenge?

Single and mixed macronutrient challenges are designed to test different things. Single macronutrient challenges are not representative of a real meal and therefore do not elicit all processes necessary to evaluate phenotypic flexibility. We use a mixed macronutrient challenge test, nutritionally similar to a real meal, to temporarily disturb homeostasis and test your phenotypic flexibility, so we can create dietary recommendations personalized for you.

What’s in it and what does it taste like?

Hmm…  it tastes like a thick horchata and has a shake-like consistency. And what’s in it? Remember, in order to challenge your system, you need to consume an adequate energy load containing the appropriate amount of calories, carbs, fat, and protein, within a specific period of time in order to trigger the necessary changes in the biomarkers that are needed to make your personalized recommendations. This is why the Habit Challenge Shake looks and takes like it does and has a calorie content, protein, carbs and fats ratio, similar to a typical American breakfast.

Why do I have to drink it in 5 minutes?

Consuming the shake in 5 minutes helps to assure we can get the right measures at the right times. Think of it like a Boot Camp class. While Boot Camps challenge your body with exercise, our shake challenges your metabolism with food. It’s the best way for us to understand what your body needs.

What will it tell you?

The power of the Habit Challenge Shake is that it tells us whether your plate should be carb-friendly, protein-centered, or fat-strong. It tells us how your body handles each of these macronutrients, so we can give you specific recommendations tailored to your biology. For example, if we see that you have a harder time handling carbs, we might recommend that your plate be made up of healthy helpings of protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats.
